Urbanization and Industrialization: Ethiopia’s Path Toward Prosperity

In my opinion, Ethiopia is moving in the right economic direction, with one major exception — the rate of inflation, which remains uncomfortably high for everyone. Much of the current economic framework was originally designed under the previous regime, and I would like to believe that, in a modest way, I had some influence on those who helped shape the country’s economic vision.

More than twenty years ago, I took part in an online public forum where I argued, in my amateurish way, that Ethiopia urgently needed to embrace urbanization and industrialization. That long essay was later published in the English edition of The Ethiopian Reporter.
At the time — and even now — I argued that a large portion of Ethiopia’s population lives under a subsistence economy. Urbanization and industrialization, I suggested, would help shift this structure toward a market-driven economy, thereby reducing poverty in the process.
Such a transformation would also generate a continuous cycle of growth. As more people enter urban areas and join the modern economy, they become new consumers with new needs and aspirations. These demands, in turn, create opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors. With a population exceeding 120 million, Ethiopia has the potential to attract investors from around the world — provided it maintains a stable and forward-looking economic strategy.
